What is "HIGH" surf?

High Surf is a condition of very dangerous and damaging waves ranging in height from 10 feet to 30 feet or more. These waves result from open ocean swell generated by storms passing far to the north of the islands. High Surf conditions occur for a few days at a time and is more common from October through March.

What areas are vulnerable to high surf?

Practically all of Oahu's exposed coastal areas are vulnerable to high surf. Learn all you can about the high surf hazard in your particular area. Neighbors, your rental agent or Department of Emergency Management (DEM) can assist in familiarizing you with this hazard.

How do I learn that high surf conditions are expected or actually exist?

The National Weather Service will issue High Surf Advisories identifying affected shorelines. The Dept. of Emergency Management will issue precautionary information and instructions over radio and TV. Police, Fire, Emergency Management and Civil Defense Officials may issue warnings and instructions using public address systems.

What should I do when High Surf Advisories are issued by the National Weather Service?

Take measures to protect your property and prepare to evacuate to a safer location if it becomes necessary. Listen to your radio or television for specific Emergency Management precautionary information and instructions.

When should I evacuate?

If the surf begins to threaten your property or if you feel endangered, leave immediately for a safer location. Evacuate immediately when directed by Police, Fire or Emergency Management Officials.

Where should I go if I evacuate?

Go to homes of family or friends, or to shelters which will be announced on local radio or TV stations, or by Police, Fire or Emergency Management Officials.

How can I obtain emergency assistance?
