SUGGESTED TSUNAMI WATCH ANNOUNCEMENTS


This information should be provided to guests, employees, vendors, passengers, etc., in the form of announcements, flyers, and/or handouts.

      A Tsunami Watch has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

      A Tsunami Watch means that an earthquake in the Pacific Basin may have produced dangerous waves that could affect Oahu.

      Investigations to determine if a tsunami has been generated or to cancel the Watch are in progress.

      If waves have been generated:

         They will affect the beaches and low lying coastal areas of Oahu.

         Their earliest arrival on Oahu is estimated to be ___________(AM) (PM) (today) (tomorrow).

    Determine if you are within or will be transiting a tsunami evacuation zone during the course of your activities today.

    If waves are confirmed:

      A Tsunami Warning will be issued.

      Civil Defense sirens will be sounded island-wide.

      Be prepared to evacuate:

         Beaches and low lying coastal areas.

         Vertically - To the third floor or above in a multiple story building of heavy concrete or steel construction that has at least six stories.

         Horizontally - By moving outside the zones and remaining in place or going to a nearby shelter.

    For updates and instructions:

      Stay tuned to local radio and television stations

      Establish contact with:

       Business/Hotel Management, your passenger agent, tour guide, local residents, or the Department of Emergemcy Management. They will provide guidance on actions you should take if a Tsunami Warning is announced
