SAMPLE TSUNAMI WARNING CHECKLIST

This document contains general guidance for actions which need to be considered when a Tsunami Warning is issued. It is not intended as a definitive response document but may be used as the basis for the development of detailed business plans.

NOTE 1:

If an Urgent Tsunami Warning is issued without the shaking associated with a local earthquake or tremor, immediately leave or vertically evacuate all tsunami evacuation zones.

NOTE 2:

If a local earthquake or tremor makes it difficult to stand or maintain balance:

If indoors, take cover under a desk, table, or supported doorway.

If outdoors, stay in open areas until the shaking stops.

Then, as conditions permit, immediately leave or vertically evacuate all tsunami evacuation zones.

Civil Defense sirens will sound when a Tsunami Warning is issued. See the General Information section for a time table of additional siren activations.

Receive Civil Defense warning information and instructions over radio or television stations.

      Copy Civil Defense instructions.

Reconfirm time remaining to first wave arrival.

      Minimize outgoing telephone calls.

Implement applicable portions of the guidance contained in the sample Tsunami Watch Checklist.

Advise employees, guests, clients, vendors, and/or passengers of the Tsunami Warning and estimated time of first wave arrival.

See suggested announcements for Tsunami Watches and Tsunami Warnings.

      Complete evacuation, if required.

      Secure evacuated facilities.

      If departing an evacuation zone:

        Turn off gas and electricity.

If remaining in a multiple story building at the 3rd floor or above:

Schedule gas and electricity turnoff prior to first wave arrival.

Ensure all employees, guests, clients, vendors or passengers are accounted for.

Await announcement of the "All Clear" over the radio and television.

        Review the "All Clear" checklist.
