The Department of the Medical Examiner offers tours of the facility with the objective of death prevention through education.
The participants will have an opportunity to visit our laboratory and morgue with no exposure to actual autopsies.
During the tour, a Power Point presentation will be given on drug-related deaths, violent deaths, as well as alcohol and speeding related motor vehicle deaths. In addition, risk factors for teen suicides and baby deaths will be identified. The emphasis of the presentation is prevention through education.
Objectives:
1. To prevent violent deaths through education;
2. To inform students of opportunities in the health-care and forensic science fields;
3. To reinforce that life is precious, yet fragile, and should not be taken lightly.
Target Audience:
1. High school students;
2. Primarily, students at-risk for drug/alcohol/pregnancy/suicide behaviors;
3. Secondarily, students interested in careers in forensic sciences.
Tour Parameters:
1. Groups up to 30;
2. Permission granted by parent, slips retained by school;
3. Students must be accompanied by a chaperone;
4. Weekday afternoons, preferably Wednesday or Thursday.
