HOW DO I APPLY?

There are two ways to apply for promotional jobs:

1.                  On-line Application: Click here to complete an application on-line by the application deadline stated.  Applications submitted electronically must be submitted by midnight of the announced last day for filing applications.  Click here for information about on-line access locations.

2.                  Traditional "Paper" Applications
Completed applications may be submitted by mail or in person by the deadline stated.  Applications submitted by mail must be postmarked by midnight of the announced last day for filing applications.

IS THERE AN APPLICATION DEADLINE?

WHAT IS THE SELECTION PROCESS?

            Review of Application

Applications are reviewed by the Department of Human Resources to determine the applicant's qualification for the job.  Applicants are notified by e-mail or mail as to whether they meet the requirements for the job; when and where to report for any written tests or other tests; and their examination results.  Applicants may request clarification or an administrative review of a qualification or examination determination within 10 calendar days following the receipt of notice or the postmark date of the notice of examination results.  They may also register an appeal with the Civil Service Commission within 20 calendar days following the receipt of notice or the postmark date of an administrative review decision.

            Establishment of an Eligible List

Applicants who are deemed to meet the qualification requirements for the position applied for are placed on an eligible list.  The Eligible List is effective for at least one year, and may be extended by the Director of Human Resources.  Qualified candidates are placed on the eligible list in descending order, based on their examination scores.

            Interview and Selection

The department with the vacancy schedules and conducts interviews.  The department may select any one of those interviewed, and will notify each person interviewed of the department's decision.  The person selected must meet the health and physical requirements for the job.

City department heads have the right to fill a vacancy through these and any other procedures established by Civil Service Rules and Regulations. 

This notice does not preclude consideration of qualified City employees who are eligible for work injury placement, promotion, demotion or transfer, and former City employees for re-employment.

IS THERE A NEW PROBATION PERIOD?

Yes. Those selected shall serve a 6-month new probationary period.

ARE APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE AT ANY SATELLITE CITY HALL LOCATIONS?

No. Applications are no longer available at Satellite City Hall locations. Applications must be completed on-line or picked up by visiting our office.  Application forms will no longer be mailed or facsimiled.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE ARE TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES WITH THE ON-LINE APPLICATION SYSTEM?

Call (808) 768-8536 and leave a voice message that includes:

1. your full legal name
2. your telephone number
3.
the title of the position you are applying for
4. a BRIEF description of the difficulty you are encountering

We will promptly return your call the next business day to assist you with the application process. Please be assured that an exception may be granted in accepting application if you were unable to submit your application by the established closing date/time.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: The above 4 items must be included in your voice mail message in order to be given consideration for an exception.
