POSITION INFORMATION
After 12 months of satisfactory service as a Metropolitan Police Recruit, eligible to become a Metropolitan Police Officer I, $3,516 per month (PO-07), plus $138.68 per month, Standard of Conduct Pay. And for those eligible, car allowance, night differential, and extra pay for off-duty work.
Receives intensive classroom and field training in the principles, practices, procedures and techniques of police work which prepares the recruit to perform the duties of a police officer including the detection, apprehension and arrest of suspects and use of firearms. Recruits are also required to pass a rigorous fitness testing program. Must be able to work irregular hours, shift and weekend work. Exposure to hazardous and obnoxious conditions.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
You must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements must be met at the time of application.
AGE: 20 years of age.
EDUCATION: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
LICENSE: Valid motor vehicle driver's license (Type 3).
FIREARMS: Must meet Federal and State eligibility requirements to possess firearms. (See Eligibility to Possess Firearms)
CITIZENSHIP: Citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States.
As part of the selection process:
CHARACTER & BACKGROUND: Recruits must possess sound moral character, integrity, and credibility which demonstrate their effectiveness in carrying out the various duties and responsibilities of the position. Each candidate's character and background will be thoroughly reviewed to determine suitability for employment.
PHYSICAL FITNESS STANDARDS: Applicants will be required to pass a Physical Fitness Test. Candidates should prepare themselves by remaining physically fit. The Physical Fitness Test is conducted to determine whether a candidate has the required physical ability to carry out the duties of a police officer.
MEDICAL: Must meet the medical requirements established for City and County of Honolulu Metro Police Recruit. A medical examination will be administered by our Health Services Division to determine whether the candidate meets the requirements for vision, hearing, nervous system, cardiovascular system, back, etc.
Vision:
1) Visual acuity must be 20/20 binocular with or without correction.
2) Uncorrected visual acuity must be 20/40 binocular for wearers of hard and semi-rigid gas permeable contact lenses or glasses.
3) Successful long-term soft daily wear contact lens wearers correctable to 20/20 must have worn their contact lenses 6 months or more.
4) Significant loss of color vision is unacceptable.
5) Significant decrement in visual field performance (peripheral vision) in either eye is unacceptable.
6) Surgically corrected vision has additional requirements.
Hearing:
Pure tone thresholds in the unaided worst ear not worse than 25 dB at 500 Hz, 1000Hz, or 2000Hz, and not worse than 35 dB loss at 3000Hz or no greater than 30 dB at any of the first three frequencies and average loss of less than 30 dB for all four frequencies is acceptable.
EXAMINATION PROCESS
EXAMINATION WEIGHT:
Written Test.........................................100%
Approximately 7 days prior to the written test, candidates will be notified by mail of the date, time and place.
The written test will be administered in Honolulu, Hawaii only.
Special Requests: Written test accommodations (i.e. for certified disabled candidates, religious beliefs, etc.) are available upon request. Requests must be submitted in writing at the time of application.

ELIGIBILITY TO POSSESS FIREARMS
Applicants must meet Federal and State eligibility requirements to possess firearms. Some examples of persons who are disqualified to carry firearms are persons who have been convicted of any felony, crime of violence, illegal sale of any drug, misdemeanor of domestic violence, etc.
WRITTEN TEST
The test consists of multiple choice items in observation and memory, written communication/report writing, reading and understanding written information, and reasoning/analytical ability. You must pass the written test to be considered further. If you do not pass the written test, you may re-apply by resubmitting an application.
ELIGIBILITY
After you pass the written test, you are placed on a Police Recruit eligible list. The eligible list is effective for at least two years from the date of establishment. You will not be allowed to re-apply during the time you are on the eligible list.
ADMINISTRATIVE REVIEW AND APPEAL
Applicants may request clarification of their disqualification or re-evaluation of their qualification with the Examination Specialist within 10 calendar days following the postmark/e-mail date of the notice of examination results. If unresolved, applicants may file an informal complaint (administrative review) within ten calendar days following the postmark/e-mail date of the Specialist's notice of examination results. Applicants may appeal the administrative review decision to the Civil Service Commission within 20 calendar days after receipt of the written response to the informal complaint.
SELECTION PROCESS
For applicants who pass the written test, the Police Department requires you to complete a questionnaire that asks about your education, employment, driving record, previous residences, traffic and criminal history and other aspects of your personal history. You will be required to complete a series of psychological and behavioral assessments. Oral interviews will be conducted by both the department and a police psychologist. The Police Department will conduct a thorough investigation of your character and background. A polygraph test will be administered.
You must also submit your high school diploma or equivalent, your driver's license, and other documents as necessary. A valid Hawaii State driver's license is required by date of hire.
Failure to submit any of the required documents or falsification of such documents or statements will result in disqualification. Failure in any part of the processing may be cause for non-selection. For example, a record of misconduct may be cause for disqualification and removal from the eligible list.
Candidates will be required to pass a Physical Fitness Test. The fitness test consists of:
Agility run: 21.6 seconds
1 bench press: 68% of body weight
300 meter run: 82.8 seconds
1.5 mile run: 21 minutes
You will be required to pass a medical examination and a drug screening test. Illegal use of drugs is grounds for disqualification.
To meet the requirements of the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, all persons selected must provide original documents to verify identity and employment eligibility prior to appointment.
The selection process will take approximately 6-7 months.
Out-of-state and outer island applicants must travel four times to Honolulu for the written test and further evaluations.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD
All Metro Police Recruits must successfully pass an initial probationary period of 12 months before becoming a regular member of Civil Service.
