Honolulu EMS -- A Brief History

1910 -- The Queen's Hospital begins private ambulance service

HPD ambulance attendants -Wm. Meyers and Wm. McCullen, c. 1916

1916 -- The Honolulu Police Department (HPD) begins the city's first ambulance service

Horse drawn ambulance, c. 1892

 

1917 -- HPD hires full time ambulance attendants and gives the ambulance service to the Health Department

 

 

1931-- 24 hour/day service begins

 

Cadillac ambulance used by Hawaii Ambulance Service c. 1960

1960s -- Basic life support and CPR classes begin for ambulance attendants

 Suburban chassies ambulance

 

1971 -- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) classes begin

 

 
1973 -- MEDICOM radio network for ambulance to hospital communication established  

 

1974 -- Agreement with Army 68th Medical Detachment integrates helicopter transport with C&C and Army personnel attending to the patient

1975 -- Mobile Intensive Care Technician (MICT) program established; county 911 system finished

1976 -- Co-response agreement with Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and United States Coast Guard is established

1977 -- Advanced Cardiac and Trauma Life Support classes begin, Federal EMS standards achieved
CCEMS MICTs, CC Water Safety and HFD work together to resucitate a drowning vicitm
