BUS SERVICE IMPROVEMENT PLAN - East Honolulu

Routes 1, 21, 22, And 58 Will Be Restructured To Improve Service Quality And Reliability. 

Current Route 1 will be improved and restructured as follows:

 

New Route 1L will provide semi-express service on weekdays between Chinatown and Hawaii Kai servicing limited stops between the Alapai Transit Center and Kahala Mall. 

 

When Route 1L is operating, Route 1 will travel exclusively between Kalihi Transit Center and Kahala Mall providing local service to all stops.

 

When Route 1L is not operating, Route 1 will travel between Kalihi Transit Center and Hawaii Kai providing local service to all stops.

 

Current Route 1 trips to Aina Haina and Upper Aina Haina will be provided by new circulator Route 233, traveling between Kahala Mall, Aina Haina, and Upper Aina Haina. 

 

Routes 1 and 1L will not service Aina Haina via East and West Hind Drives and will remain on Kalanianaole Highway.

 

The current Route 1 services that are labeled 1 – Hawaii Kai Drive and 1 – Lunalilo Home Road will be combined and into one common route. 

 

New circulator Routes 231 and 232 will provide service to Hahaione Valley and the Kaumakani Street hillside, respectively.  These routes will originate from the Hawaii Kai Park & Ride and provide connections to and from Route1 and the new Route 1L.

Current Route 21 will be restructured as follows:

 

Route 21 will be renumbered into two distinct routes.  Route 234 will service Waialae Nui; Route 235 will service Waialae Iki.

Current Route 22 will be restructured as follows:

 

When Hanauma Bay is closed on Tuesdays, Route 22 will not operate.

 

Route 22 schedules will be coordinated with new Route 23 service between Waikiki and Hawaii Kai along the Diamond Head-Kahala Mall-Kalanianaole corridor.

Current Route 58 will be restructured as follows:

 

Route 58 will be renumbered to Route 23.  The route will be modified in Hawaii Kai to service the Hawaii Kai Park & Ride, Keahole and Hawaii Kai Drives and Wailua Street.

 

Route 23 schedules will be coordinated and offset with Route 22 service between Waikiki and Hawaii Kai along the Diamond Head-Kahala Mall-Kalanianaole corridor.

 

Route 23 service will operate on an hourly schedule; currently Route 58 operates on a half-hour schedule.
