    1. How do I renew my license if I am currently out of state?
      Please send us a letter requesting to renew your Hawaii Driver License.  Your letter should include:
      • Name (as it appears on the license)
      • Mailing address
      • Social Security Number or Hawaii Driver License number
      • Date of birth
      • Email (to notify you of any discrepancy or incomplete paperwork)
      • Signature

      You can mail your letter to Driver License Section, P.O. Box 30340, Honolulu, HI 96820-0340 or you can fax it to (808) 832-2904.  When we receive your letter, we will mail a renewal packet to you.  You must complete all the forms and send them back (instructions will be included in the packet).  Upon successfully completing the requirements, we will mail you the valid-without-photo license.  If your image is found in our driver database, both the photo and the signature will be utilized.

    2. How do I get a duplicate license if I am currently out of state?
      Please send us a letter for a duplicate of your Hawaii Driver License. Your letter should include:
      • Name (as it appears on the license)
      • Mailing address as it will appear on the license
      • Social Security Number or Hawaii Driver License number
      • Date of birth
      • Email (to notify you of any discrepancy or incomplete paperwork)
      • Reason (lost or stolen; name change – include a state certified document)
      • Signature
      • Fee of $5.00 (payable to City & County of Honolulu)
      You can mail your letter to Driver License Section, P.O. Box 30340, Honolulu, HI 96820-0340 or you can fax it to (808) 832-2904. If you fax your request, you will have to make an arrangement for someone to pay for you in our office. If there is no compliance requirement pending in any jurisdiction (including this state) that prevents you from a getting a license, we will mail you a valid-without-photo license. If your image is found in our driver database, both the photo and the signature will be utilized.

    3. How do I convert my provisional license if I am currently out of state?
      Please send us a letter requesting conversion of your provisional license to a full Hawaii Driver License. Your letter should include:
      • Name (as it appears on the license)
      • Mailing address
      • Social Security Number or Hawaii Driver License number
      • Date of birth
      • Email (to notify you of any discrepancy or incomplete paperwork)
      • Signature

    4. How can I obtain a verification of my driver license?

    5. How do I notify you if I change my address?
      Please send us a letter with your name, old address, new address, social security number, date of birth and signature.  You can mail your letter to Driver License Section, P.O. BOX 30340, Honolulu, HI  96820-0340 or you can fax it to (808) 832-2904. When we receive your letter we will change your address in the computer.  If you want a license with your new address, you can go to any driver license station and apply for a duplicate (fee is $5.00) or request duplicate by mail if you are out-of-state.

    6. How do I apply for a motorcycle instruction permit?
      You need to come in to the nearest Driver License and fill an application for a type 2 permit.  Please bring your valid Hawaii license.  You will need to take the motorcycle test.  If you do not have a Hawaii license, you will need to bring a photo ID along with your original birth certificate and original social security card.  You will need to take 2 tests:  general knowledge and motorcycle test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 2 permit.  The fees are: $2 for the written test and $5 for the permit.  We will let you know more information about the road test after passing the written test.

    7. How do I apply for an automobile instruction permit?
      You need to come in to the nearest Driver License and fill an application for a type 3 (car) permit.  Please bring photo identification along with your original U.S. social security card and original or certified birth certificate.   You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 permit.  A road test is also required after passing the written test. Fees:  $2 test, $5 permit, $8 road test fee and $18 for the license.

    8. What are the requirements to apply for a minor's instruction permit?
      You have to be 15 ½ years old to apply for an instruction permit.  You have to present the original birth certificate and original social security card.  The parents listed on the birth certificate needs to sign the parental consent behind the application to be witnessed by our examiner or a notary public prior to taking the written test.  You have to hold your instruction permit 180 days and must present your driver education certification before you are eligible to take the road test.  Fees:  $2 test, $5 permit, $8 road test and $12 for the license.

    9. What are the requirements to apply for an instruction permit for foreign nationals?
      You need to proceed to the Social Security office and apply for a number.  If you are not eligible to get a social security number, please advise that office to fax the verification letter to the nearest driver licensing office.  You also need to bring your valid passport with an attached I-94 card.  Fill an application for a type 3 (car) instruction permit. You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 permit.  A road test is also required after passing the written test.  Fees:  $2 test, $5 permit, $8 road test fee and $18 for the license.

    10. What are the requirements to apply for an instruction permit for foreign nationals who have valid foreign licenses?
      You need to proceed to the Social Security office and apply for a number.  If you are not eligible to get a social security number, please advise that office to fax the verification letter to the nearest driver licensing office.  You also need to bring your valid passport with an attached I-94 card.  Fill an application for a type 3 (car) instruction permit. You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 permit.  A road test is also required after passing the written test.  Upon passing the road test, we will invalidate your foreign license and notify the proper agency.  Fees:  $2 test, $5 permit, $8 road test fee and $18 for the license.

    11. How do I renew my instruction permit?
      You need to come in to the nearest driver license station or satellite city halls (Fort Street Mall, Hawaii Kai, and Pearlridge) with your instruction permit.  You can renew as early as 30 days and have a grace period of 90 days without retaking the test.  For minors, if you come in 31 days after the expiration date, your road test eligibility date will move 180 days from the original expiration date of your permit.  The fee for renewal is $5.

    12. How do I get a duplicate instruction permit?
      You need to come in to the nearest driver license station or satellite city halls (Fort Street Mall, Hawaii Kai, and Pearlridge) and apply for duplicate.  Please fill an application and bring your instruction permit.  If your permit is lost or stolen, please bring photo identification.  If you changed your name through divorce, marriage, naturalization or Lieutenant Governor's office, please bring your original or certified state agency document.  The fee for duplicate permit is $5.

    13. How do I transfer my valid out-of-state license?
      You need to come in to the nearest driver licensing station and fill an application for an out of state transfer.  Please bring your valid U.S. or Territory license and an original U.S. social security card.  The two documents you present must match your name.  If you changed your name through divorce, marriage, naturalization or Lieutenant Governor's office, please bring your original or certified state agency document.  You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 (car) license.  Fees:  $2 for the written test and $18 for the license.  If you fail the test, you need to wait 7 days before retaking and upon passing the test; you will be required to relinquish your valid out-of-state license.  An expired out-of-state license is no longer transferable and therefore requires a road test and more fees.

    14. How do I transfer my valid out-of-state license with motorcycle endorsement?
      You need to come in to the nearest driver license and fill an application for an out of state transfer.  Please bring your valid license and an original social security card.  The two documents you present must match your name.  If you changed your name through divorce, marriage, naturalization or Lieutenant Governor's office, please bring your original or certified state agency document.  You will be required to take a general knowledge and a motorcycle written test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 23 (motorcycle/car) license.  Fees:  $2 for the written test and $18 for the license.

    15. How do I get a Hawaii license if I lost my valid out-of-state license?
      You need to come in to the nearest driver license and fill an application for an out of state transfer.  Please bring a photo ID, original social security card and the driver license number of your valid license.  We will check the state of record for the validity of the license.  You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 (car) license.  Fees:  $2 for the written test and $18 for the license.

    16. What is the requirement to transfer out-of-state license for foreign nationals?

    17. What is the requirement to transfer an expired out-of-state license for active duty military personnel?
      (NOTE: Applies only to states with automatic military extension)
      You need to come in to the nearest driver license and fill an application for an out of state transfer.  Please bring your U.S. license and your active duty Military ID.  You will be required to take a general knowledge test.  Upon passing the eye test and the written test, you will be given a type 3 (car) license.  Fees:  $2 for the written test and $18 for the license.  If you fail the test, you need to wait 7 days before retaking and upon passing the test; you will be required to relinquish your out-of-state license.

    18. What is the requirement to drive in Hawaii using my valid foreign license?
      Your valid foreign license is good to drive in Honolulu, Hawaii one year upon entry.  You will need your valid passport to show admission date.

    19. How do I apply for a duplicate license?

    20. How do I convert my provisional license to a full license?
      To convert your provisional to a full license, you must be 17 years old and must hold the provisional license for six months.  You need to fill an application and pass the eye test.  The fee is $12.00 for a 4 year-license.

    21. What happens if I let my Hawaii license expire?
      After expiration date of your license, you can no longer use your license to drive.  However, you have 90 days after expiration date to renew your Hawaii license without penalty.  A reactivation fee of $5 per 30 days or fraction thereof will be assessed after the 90 days.  A year after the expiration date, a written test and a road test is required.

      The earliest you can renew your license is six months before the expiration date.

    24. I am a Hawaii resident currently deployed overseas, what happens if I let my Hawaii license expire?
      We will honor the renewal of your Hawaii license 90 days upon return to Oahu.  You must bring original or certified copy of your deployment papers to show the date of return, duration and place of deployment.

      Effective April 30, 2008, members of any component of the U.S. armed forces who are on active federal service and whose   Hawaii driver license expired while deployed outside of the U.S. shall remain valid for 90 days after return to the U.S.

    25. I am a Hawaii resident currently deployed overseas? What happens if I let my instruction permit expire?
      If you are active duty military deployed overseas, we will honor the renewal of your Hawaii Instruction Permit 90 days upon return to Oahu.  You must bring original or certified copy of your deployment papers to show the date of return, duration and place of deployment.

    31. How do I obtain a traffic abstract, driving record or outstanding violations clearance?

    32. After my OVUII or DUI revocation period is over, how do I clear it if I am currently out of state?
      Please contact the Administrative Revocation office at 808-534-6800 for a relicensing form. If you are eligible, obtain a certified copy of the relicensing form and mail it to: City Square Driver Licensing Office, P.O. Box 30340, Honolulu, HI, 96820-0340. You will also need to send us a reinstatement fee of $20.00 payable to: City & County of Honolulu to clear your driver record.

    33. How do I obtain a criminal background history check?
      Please contact the Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center at 808-587-3100 for criminal background history.  You can mail your request to 465 S King St 101, Honolulu, HI  96813, attn:  CHRC unit.  No fax request accepted.  You can also visit their website at www.hawaii.gov/hcjdc to download the application form.

    34. What is the procedure to request a photo or information on a Hawaii licensed driver?
      We will accept a letter of request signed on your official law enforcement or government agency letterhead.  You must indicate the name of the applicant, social security account number/Hawaii driver license number, date of birth, and reason for the request.  We also need requestor's contact information including signature in the event we run across any problems/questions and notate if you want the results to be faxed, mailed or emailed.  To expedite your request, you can fax it first to 808-832-2904 and send original request to:

    35. Can I drive with my international driver license?
      The individual must have a foreign license along with their international permit to drive and a valid passport to show admission date.  The license is valid one year upon entry to U.S.  The country must be listed as a result of the United Nations Convention on Road Traffic (Geneva, 1949), and the Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American States.  For complete listing of the recognized countries, please call AAA at 808-593-2221.

      If you are not on Oahu, a signed written request is required in order to obtain information regarding your financial responsibility requirements to reinstate your driving privilege/license reinstatement.  You must write or fax your request to:

    If you are on Oahu, you must come in person between the hours of 7:45A to 3:30P to the Financial Responsibility Section located at 1199 Dillingham Blvd, A101, Honolulu, Hawaii  96813 with valid identification to obtain the financial responsibility information you need.  Although we service until 4:00P, it is to your benefit to be here at least by 3:30P to give us ample time to check your records and answer all of your questions.
