WASTEWATER OVERFLOW FRONTING QUEEN’S HOSPITAL

(Friday, October 2, 2009) – The City’s Department of Environmental Services responded this evening to a wastewater overflow fronting the Queen’s Hospital.

         Rags blocked an 8-inch vitrified clay pipe sending 1,500 gallons of untreated wastewater out a manhole at 550 South Beretania Street, right in front of the hospital.  Approximately 1,450 gallons made its way to a storm drain at the intersection of South Beretania and Lauhala streets, which leads to Honolulu Harbor.  The call came in at 5:00 p.m.  ENV arrived at the site at 5:50 p.m. and secured the overflow at 6:15 p.m.

         The state Department of Health was notified.  ENV crews cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the area surrounding the overflow and will begin signing and sampling in the morning.
