CITY BEGINS UPDATE OF BICYCLE MASTER PLAN

             The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services is beginning its update of the 1999 Honolulu Bicycle Master Plan with public workshops to be held May 13-15.

            The new plan will cover all of Oahu and will guide future planning to better integrate bicycling into the island’s transportation system.  The updated plan will inventory and assess current conditions, identify new routes, and prioritize bikeway capital improvement projects.  Ensuring bike-accessible transit stations will be an important component of the new plan. 

            Mayor Mufi Hannemann, whose administration budgeted $370,000 for the project, said, “The Oahu Bike Plan update will take us a step closer to fulfilling my long-standing quality-of-life goal of laying the groundwork for the integration of bicycling into our multi-modal transportation system, which includes the fixed guideway, TheBus, TheBoat, and other means of movement—and ultimately into the development of communities that will emerge around the transit stations.”

            The plan update includes a variety of opportunities for public involvement in identifying routes, establishing priorities, and assisting in the evaluation of supporting plans and policies.  The first of two series of public workshops will be held on these dates:

§      May 13 - Kapolei Hale, 1^st floor conference room, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

§      May 14 - Pali Golf Course, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

§      May 15 - Blaisdell Center Hawaii Rooms I and II, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
