Care of Your Home After a Fire Strikes American Red Cross Those who have experienced a fire or other disaster may obtain assistance form the local Chapter of the American Red Cross (ARC). Utilities After a fire, the fire department may have the utility services shut off as a safety precaution. To reestablish utility services, call:
Property Insurance Immediately contact your insurance company or landlord. Provide your insurance agent with a list of items lost in the fire. As a precaution, have a list of your possessions prepared to include: 1. Photographs. 2. Descriptions of antiques and jewelry. 3. Replacement cost of each item. 4. Date of purchase for all items. Important Documents Keep the following documents in a safe place. Having them on-hand immediately after a fire will speed up your insurance claim process. 1. Insurance policies. 2. Property deeds and wills. 3. Automobile ownership papers. 4. Income tax records. 5. Medical records. 6. Bank books. 7. Birth certificates. 8. Credit cards. 9. Home inventory list. How can you safeguard important documents? 1. Rent a safety deposit box. 2. Install a home vault or approved container. 3. Install an Underwriters Laboratories approved FIRE SAFE or equal container. Property loss may entitle you to deductions on your income tax.
