The Honolulu Fire Department held a Change of Command Ceremony on January 17, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., in the Honolulu Hale Courtyard. The formal ceremony marked the transfer of leadership between the 32nd Fire Chief, Attilio K. Leonardi, and Kenneth G. Silva, the 33rd Fire Chief. The Change of Command symbolizes the transfer of total responsibility, authority, and accountability from one individual to another. The heart of the ceremony consists of the acceptance of the Oath of Office, the Pinning of the Badge, and the Passing of the Fire Chief's Speaking Trumpet. The Honolulu Fire Department was established on January 11, 1851 and as is the oldest fire department West of the Rocky Mountains. The HFD enjoys a rich history that includes members of the Hawaiian monarchy serving as firefighters. The HFD's Honor Guard, outfitted in traditional early modern Hawaiian garb will also be part of the ceremony. The Change of Command Ceremony is unique to the Honolulu Fire Department and is a reflection of the culture of our fire department and its members.
