2006 Fire Prevention Week (FPW)

FPW was October 8-14, 2006.  The National Fire Protection Association selected this year's campaign theme, "Prevent Cooking Fires:  Watch What You Heat."  This year's theme emphasizes that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home and stresses the importance of teaching families, especially children, how to prevent cooking fires from getting out of their control.

FPW's roots began with the Great Chicago Fire on October 8-10, 1871, and on its 40th anniversary, the Fire Marshals Association of North America decided that its anniversary should be observed nationally in a way that would keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention.  Since 1922, FPW has been observed during the week of October 9.

During FPW, all Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) fire stations will be open to the public for station tours during business hours.  Displays are located in front of each station and Department personnel will participate in a number of activities to promote the 2006 FPW campaign theme.

A major component of the HFD's 2006 FPW is our Fire Fighter's Safety Guide (FFSG), which was recently distributed to elementary students.  The FFSG is used as an effective educational tool to bring the message of fire safety to youths.

Although FPW for 2006 has passed, the HFD urges the public to practice fire prevention and fire safety 365 days per year
